I wish I had a dollar for every time I have been asked this question. There are many differing views on this question. Consideration has to be given to the initial purchase and installation costs, expected energy consumption as well as the cost of the energy and the expected maintenance costs. Then there are the environmental impacts of energy consumption, embodied energy and water usage. Lastly there is the location of the system.
With all this weighed up, in 99.9% of all cases I would recommend electric boosting over gas boosting for split systems in the Canberra Queanbeyan region.

These views are based on my experience and training in the Canberra and Queanbeyan region only. This is where I have spent the last 30 years, servicing, repairing, supplying and installing all types of hot water systems.
I am a licensed plumber and gasfitter with a restricted electrical licence. I studied at The Solar Hot Water Institute which operated in Mossvale, NSW.
I am also a former Director of Master Plumbers Australia and a former President of Master Plumbers ACT.
