There are many considerations when choosing the best solar hot water system for your needs. Roof mounted tank systems are usually chosen because of their simplicity and because of the space they save on the ground. Unfortunately, they can be among the least efficient of all solar hot water systems.
Although you may find bad reviews about these roof mounted tank systems (compared to the evacuated tube systems), this may be attributed to the vast number of systems which have been installed in the Canberra Queanbeyan region over many years compared to the number of evacuated tube systems.

Roof mounted, flat panel systems have the tank installed on the roof above the solar hot water collectors. They do not require a pump and work on the principles of a thermosiphon. They generally do not freeze because the heat transfer fluid in the collectors contains an anti-freeze anti-boil agent called Glycol. Because they are basic, the maintenance and repair costs are extremely low. As they are all owned by Rheem, parts are very easy to source and Rheem has had many years to perfect their product.
Most models suited to Canberra and Queanbeyan are in the 180-300 litre range with two panels. Electric boosting is better than gas boosting unless you do not have a reliable source of electricity.
