Why Dux Sunpro solar hot water panels freeze and crack in Canberra.
From 2009 up until 2012 a large number of DUX SunPro gas boosted and electric boosted solar hot water systems were installed in the Canberra Queanbeyan region.
Unfortunately DUX Hot Water made a lot of false claims about the frost protection measures in its SunPro Solar hot water heater range. Many of the DUX solar hot water panels installed in Canberra and Queanbeyan have since split due to freezing. Those that haven’t already split are ticking time bombs.
The panels were meant to be protected by an electronic frost protection system built into the brains of the pump station (Hotlogic™). It would circulate water between the tank and the panels if the water in the panels dropped below 3°C. If the Hotlogic™ failed, the DUX anti frost valve would open at 2°C allowing water to escape from the panels to prevent freezing.
Our experience has shown that this design left an unprotected zone where most of the freezing and damage occurrs in the panels.
